Orcas Island

Some photos from a long-weekend on Orcas Island, largest of the San Juan Islands, which lie between the Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island and the northwest corner of Washington. I had never heard of this island before early last week, when I was scanning around using Google maps trying to find somewhere cool to go for the long weekend...

We boarded a ferry Saturday morning in the town of Anacortes, Washington, and sailed out into a mist thicker than pea soup. The island was amazing, with awesome forests and lakes and black-tailed deer everywhere. The best part was the neap-tide at Crescent Beach, where we saw many sea stars, crabs, and other sea creatures. According to wikipedia, 'Orcas' is short for Horcasitas, part of the name of the Viceroy of Mexico who sent an exploratory expedition to the San Juans in 1791 (I also learned that 'Anacortes' is short for Anna Curtis, the wife of one of the early settlers).
