Here are a few scenes from the Yukon along the Alaska Highway and from Kluane National Park and Reserve, a vast wilderness of mountains and glaciers in the Southwestern corner of the Yukon. The Yukon is awesome. We were blown away by the sight of the St Wrangell Elias mountains in Kluane as we approached them after passing through Whitehorse. We spent a couple of nights in the Yukon boreal forest and did some trekking on the edge of Kluane park, where we saw lots of caribou, moose, and grizzly bear footprints (with huge claw marks). The highway through the Yukon is pretty rough and that combined with constant extreme winds made for some pretty wild driving. There are a lot of abandoned gas stations, lodges, and other failed businesses along the highway, giving it an almost post-apocalyptic feeling. Help is a long way off up here, so you really do need to be prepared and well-equipped. For me, the sparsity of human habitation and the spectacular landscape make the Yukon one of the most appealing places I have visited - I can't wait to go back and spend more time there...
